New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club

Aoteora
Christchurch, NZ

Status: Complete

The New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club is the oldest surf lifesaving club in Aoteora (New Zealand), and at its heart is a shared sense of community identity, rich club history, and connection to the rugged coastal landscape of Christchurch.

In collaboration with South By Southeast Architects, the new club building has rekindled a sense of ownership and club identity for all its users.

The sculpted timber form carves spaces for community to dwell, observe and gather, allowing the public to inhabit niches at ground level overlooking the regenerated foreshore.

I worked on the project narrative, building articulation and massing, spatial planning and site circulation of the New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club. I facilitated design workshops and reviews, and prepared a conceptual and schematic design report with associated documentation.

My focus was developing and detailing the building articulation to contribute to the public realm, with features such as the carved timber niche for seating and the warm rock wall shed to lie against on cooler beach days.

SXSE continued the project beyond the Schematic Design phase, and I participated in multiple design reviews throughout the Design Development and Construction phases.
