NEW PERFORMING ARTS VENUE
Meanjin Country
Brisbane, QLD
Status: In Construction
The New Performing Arts Venue (NPAV) is the winning result of Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s design competition, entered with design partners Blight Rayner.
NPAV sits on a compact site, making up the fourth quarter of the QPAC. The new 1500 seat auditorium will serve ballet, opera, drama, and major musicals, with the flexibility to cater for new and emerging theatre styles.
The theatre is conceived as the warm heart of NPAV, made of curved timber ribbons that express energy flow between performer and viewer.
During the concept design phase, I contributed to the project’s massing and articulation, primarily focusing on the foyers behind the veil and their interface with the core, as well as the F&B, retail, amenities, and lift foyers, before being assigned to work on the auditorium.
In the schematic design phase, the scope between Blight Rayner and Snøhetta was divided, allowing our team to concentrate on the development and detailing of the auditorium. This became my primary focus for the remainder of the project, with an emphasis on timber paneling and detailing.
